Many recruiters plan to hire more developers than in 2021 and are reassessing the methods they use to interview and hire the right candidates.
The sky is clear for developers and many freelancers are optimistic. Yes, but. To take advantage of this favorable market, they must be… competent and qualified. The Tech Hiring Survey report from CoderPad (a training and interviewing platform) is based on responses from 14,000 developers and recruiters in 131 countries.
Although many student coders participated in the survey, the majority of respondents were professionals working in a range of industries. On the salary side, the United States is the most lucrative country for developer jobs, with an average salary of $95,879, 44% of developers surveyed earning $100,000 or more, and 5% more than $200,000.
Next comes Switzerland, with an average salary of $90,462, followed by Canada, with a salary of $71,193. Other countries with high salaries are the UK, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Regarding the specialties most in demand for hiring, recruiters indicated web development, DevOps, and IA / ML. Although web development and AI seemed to be the most promising areas then, recruiters said they also needed candidates with skills in cloud computing and database software.
When it comes to programming languages, JavaScript, Java, and Python were cited as the top three languages recruiters will be looking for in candidates in 2022.
C, C++, and C# languages will also be in high demand. But for some lesser-known and more specialized languages, such as Clojure and Scala, the demand for employment will exceed the supply.
“Full-stack” and “back-end” engineer: rare and expensive profiles
Of recruiters surveyed, 35% said they plan to hire more than 50 developers this year. The percentage of those aiming to hire 201 to 500 developers more than doubled from 2021, while the number of those looking to hire more than 500 professionals jumped 50%.
To pay for these new hires, more than half of recruiters said they will have more budgets this year. These higher budgets may also be the result of higher salary demands from developers, a factor mentioned by several recruiters in the survey.
But to win these open positions and higher salaries, developers must have the right profiles. Nearly half of recruiters said finding qualified developers to fill positions was their biggest challenge.

The two positions cited as the hardest to fill are a full-stack engineer and a back-end engineer, both of which will be in high demand in 2022. Other positions recruiters will struggle to fill are DevOps, Application Developer, Front End Developer, and Engineer.
To find them, companies are looking for other veins. The number of recruiters hiring developers from non-academic backgrounds rose from 23% to 39% in one year, a boon for many candidates since 40% of developers surveyed didn’t learn to code in school and don’t have any graduate training.
